Funny Meme Faces Biography

True Story is a rage comic character based on a black and white contour drawing of How I Met Your Mother character Barney Stinson (played by actor Neil Patrick Harris) smiling smugly while holding a wine glass. Often accompanied by the text “true story,” the character can mostly be found in the final panel of a rage comic to either indicate or falsely claim that it is based on a true story.
Origin

The colloquial expression “true story” has been used as an affirmative statement to corroborate one’s claim or allegation. Online, one of the earliest archived instances of this was posted on three separate Usenet newsgroups on November 2nd, 1995.[9] The post contained a diatribe criticizing the logic of seasoned posters who were complaining about an influx of newbies to Usenet. As an aside, author David Sewell used an example from his real life with a “true story” disclaimer, comparing the actions of a professor complaining about a student playing loud music to the way the older Usenet users were acting towards newcomers.

(True story: a professor at a private university complained to the Dean of Students about a student who every day would blare music from his dorm room right across from the professor’s afternoon class; the kid protested loudly that this practice was “part of his culture” and that the professor had no right to try to suppress it. Now where have we heard that argument lately…?)

An Urban Dictionary[3] definition for the phrase used in this manner was submitted nearly ten years later on June 20th, 2004. “True Story” gained much of its catchphrase status through the character Barney Stinson from the TV sitcom series How I Met Your Mother[1], which began airing in 2005. Throughout the show, Stinson frequently uses the expression “True Story” as an ending to theories or stories that are for the most part probably false or nonsense.

In Rage Comics

On February 2nd, 2011, Redditor acodemaster posted a thread titled “My submission for the ‘True Story’ Panel – Neil Patrick Harris”[2], suggesting a still shot (shown below, right) of Stinson from “Do I Know You?,” the first episode of How I Met Your Mother’s fourth season, be used for the rage face. Though many submissions were posted, the winning photo (shown below, left) was created by Redditor vorin.

Spread

The character was added to All The Rage Faces[15] on September 11th, 2011. The “True Story” character quickly took off on the f7u12 subreddit, which has more than 12,000 results[14] for the phrase as of September 2012, and numerous rage comics based on the character have been featured across other internet humor blogs, including Memebase[5], FunnyJunk[7] and 9gag.[8] The popularity of the phrase also led to an image macro generator page on DIYLOL.[4] Related merchandises featuring the “True Story” character can be also found on Zazzle[6] and Etsy.[16]

Additional rage comics using the character continue to be shared on Memebase[10], Rage Comic Archive[13] and Tumblr[11], where users will also simply use the image as a reaction face in a text post. A Facebook fan page[12] for the character has more than 157,000 likes as of September 2012.
Notable Examples

The reaction image is primarily used in the final panel of rage comics to re-emphasize the statement made in the preceding panel. On the f7u12 subreddit, such posts have been typically titled with the tag “[True Story].”About

Grumpy Cat is a nickname given to an angry-looking snowshoe cat that rose to fame online after its pictures were posted to Reddit in late September 2012. The cat is also known as “Tard” which is short for Tardar (Tartar) Sauce.
Origin

Grumpy Cat is owned by Arizona resident Tabatha Bundesen. The original photos of Grumpy Cat were posted to the /r/pics subreddit[1] by Bundesen’s brother Bryan on September 23rd, 2012 (shown below).

The Reddit post was instantly met with photoshopped parodies and image macros from others, reaching the front page with more than 25,300 up votes in the first 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Imgur page[13] gained nearly 1,030,000 views in the first 48 hours. The same day, three video clips of the cat playing indoors were uploaded to YouTube by Bundesen the same day.

About

Bad Luck Brian is an image macro series featuring a photo of a blonde teenage boy wearing a plaid sweater vest and braces, accompanied by captions that describe a variety of embarrassing and tragic occurrences.
Origin

On January 23rd, 2012, the first Quickmeme[4] submission was uploaded with the caption “Takes driving test / gets first DUI” (below left). It was subsequently posted to Reddit[5] where it received less than 5 up votes. Later that day, another macro was posted to Reddit[2] with the caption “Tries to stealthily fart in class / shits” (below right) which reached the front page of the /r/adviceanimals subreddit accumulating over 3,300 up votes in less than 2 months.

Spread

On January 29th, 2012, a collection of notable examples were posted on the digital marketing blog Twenty Something.[11] On March 12th, the series saw a resurgence in popularity when Redditor Very_Juicy submitted a macro to the /r/adviceanimals[3] subreddit with the caption “Falls asleep in class / wet dream.” Within one week the post had received more than 2,900 up votes.

On March 19th, this instance was reposted to humor site 9gag[8] where it received more than 48,000 likes within 24 hours. The same post was subsequently pinned on the social photo sharing website Pinterest[10] the same day. Later that month, additional collections were hosted on Buzzfeed[13] and Funny or Die.[14]

The series has continued to spread on sites like FunnyJunk[7], Tumblr[7] and the /r/adviceanimals[12] subreddit. As of June 2012, the Quickmeme[1] page has received more than 104,047 submissions. Several Facebook pages have also been created for the character, with the largest[15] having more than 29,000 likes and the second[16] having more than 24,000.
Motif: Incontinence

Like other advice animals Bear Grylls and College Freshman, a caption trend arose in which the text on the bottom remains consistent. After the “Tries to stealthily fart in class / shits” macro was submitted to Reddit, many other derivatives were produced with “shits” as the bottom caption.

Notable Examples

Many examples in the series describe embarrassing situations involving sexuality, bodily functions or current events.

Identity Revealed

On April 11th, 2012, a Redditor claiming to be Bad Luck Brian attempted to do an AMA thread in the Ask Me Anything subreddit, but the thread was removed. The moderator who removed the post left a lengthy comment[18] explaining why, which received more than 35,000 downvotes, making it one of the most downvoted comments on Reddit of all time. Redditor coyotecarl came back on May 8th with an AMA thread[17] on the Advice Animals subreddit. The post received 24,722 upvotes and 2017 points overall.

During the thread, he revealed his name is Kyle and the photo was taken as his seventh grade school photo, but the principal made him take it over again because he was under the impression Kyle was making the face on purpose. Over the course of the 3763 comments, Redditors quickly made Bad Luck Brian instances based on stories Kyle told. He also stated that he’s had relatively good luck in his life, once winning an XBox 360 and a PSP within two weeks (below left), he was recognized by actor Seth Rogen in public (below center) and played the hand chimes.
